“The Rock” Wrestling Rings to Tequila Lip Sip Sucks

By Evelyn Harrington ·

The journey of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his Terremana tequila brand. Discover the history, the inspiration behind his venture, and how this larger-than-life personality has shaken up the spirits industry.

On a Friday night, I find myself at the Masters of Malt liquor shop, standing right next to a bottle that has The Rock’s iconic Brahma bull tattoo on it. His voice is almost audible shouting, “Finally, The Rock’s tequila has come to my local spirits shop!” Celebrity with an alcohol brand, how could I say no?

When you think about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, tequila may not be the first thing that springs to mind. Wrestling championships, hit films, eyebrow lifts—sure. But with tequila? The Rock is making waves in the spirits industry with his own brand, Terremana Tequila, in addition to conquering Hollywood.

Let’s pause to consider Dwayne Johnson’s explosive climb before we go into my tequila odyssey. The Rock has always been cooking up success, from his days as a WWE star to becoming Hollywood’s highest-paid actor. Forbes claims Johnson made an amazing $87.5 million in 2020 alone. However, it seems that this overachiever needed more than just conquering the entertainment industry.

The Rock was not a lightweight at WWE after-parties before rising to be a tequila powerhouse. Legend has it he once challenged Stone Cold Steve Austin to a beer-chugging contest after a concert.

"Tere," derived from the Latin "terra," (earth), and "Mana," the Polynesian word for "spirit".

After holding his own for twelve beers, the Rock finally tapped out and woke up thinking he had been body slammed by the whole lineup. These crazy evenings apparently motivated his search for a better tequila that wouldn’t leave you requiring a People’s Elbow to the skull the following morning. These stories give The Rock’s transition from wrestling champion to spirits entrepreneur a witty history, but he stays quiet about them.

Johnson launched Teremana Tequila in 2020; the name combines two words: “Tere,” derived from the Latin “terra,” (earth), and “Mana,” the Polynesian word for “spirit”. Like he shot linguistically with a chaser of cultural fusion!

I almost expect to hear glass breaking when I uncork the bottle and see Stone Cold Steve Austin. Rather, I’m met with an unexpectedly clean scent that makes me not want to tap out right away.

Teremana has three varieties: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo. As a real tequila newbie, I begin by pouring the Blanco over ice. The taste is fresh and clean; flavours of lemon and vanilla abound. It flows more naturally than the one-liners in “Jumanji.”

I’m impressed by the Reposado’s golden hue and oak-barrel-aged flavour as I move on. It’s got more depth than one of The Rock’s motivational Instagram posts, and that’s saying something.

The Rock is not simply idly exploring the tequila sandbox. One of the spirits brands with the quickest growth in history is Teremana. Teremana closed 300,000 nine-litre cases in its first year. That’s enough tequila, to put it in context, to make even Andre the Giant reconsider participating in a drinking competition.

Still, it goes beyond mere numbers. Using 100% ripe blue weber agave and rainwater throughout production, Teremana is dedicated to sustainability. It’s like The Rock is giving Mother Nature a friendly bear hug while simultaneously crushing the competition.

Unlike some celebrities who slap their name on a bottle and call it a day, The Rock, a Celebrity with an alcohol brand, is as hands-on with Teremana as he is in his action movies. He participates in every facet of the company, including marketing and manufacturing. With more than 300 million followers, his Instagram page often displays celebrity alcohol advertisements connected to Teremana. It’s like seeing a personal branding master lesson with a side of tequila shots.

I can’t help but feel a bit dizzy from his exuberance as I browse his feed with a glass in my hand. It’s contagious, much as his million-dollar grin is.

I am very impressed when I reach the bottom of my glass (responsibly, of course). Teremana is more than simply riding on The Rock’s popularity; it’s a quality product that can stand on its own two feet, much like its maker would after a demanding exercise.

Teremana has an exciting future. The Rock’s celebrity power plus the real quality of the tequila make it destined to be a mainstay in homes and bars both. Who knows? Perhaps one day The Rock will be Tequila Titan instead of People’s Champion.

My night with Teremana tasted what he was pouring, not so much about smelling what The Rock was cooking. And let me tell you—it’s fantastic. So, give Teremana a try the next time you’re searching for a tequila that has a punch without leaving you feeling like a folding chair in the morning. Just keep in mind: drink responsibly; you could find yourself requiring a Rock Bottom for recovery.
