Champagne Supernova 2.0: Oasis Reunion Sparks Nostalgia & Sobriety

By Evelyn Harrington ·

Iconic Britpop band Oasis teases a possible reunion after 15 years, fans are left wondering—how will the famously wild Gallagher brothers navigate their next chapter? From drunken brawls to sober reflections.

It’s ➊➒➒➏, and I’m squeezed into a hot mosh pit at Knebworth with a pint of warm beer spilling over my palm as Oasis enters the stage. Holding a bottle of champagne, Liam Gallagher swaggers ahead as Noel tunes his guitar with a cigarette hanging from his lips. Fast forward to 2024, and I’m rubbing my eyes in disbelief at the headline:

“Oasis Reunion Imminent.” The most awful thing is both Gallagher brothers are sober.

One thing Oasis supporters have discovered over the years is that one ought to prepare for the unexpected—especially regarding the Gallagher brothers. Thus, it was not just the music industry that woke up and paid attention when rumours of an Oasis reunion started to fly. The liquor industry, too, raised an eyebrow. After all, without the alcohol-soaked stories defining their history, what would an Oasis reunion be?

Let’s go back to the days when Oasis was at its pinnacle. Not only were the Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, well-known for their top-notch songs, but they were also renowned for their wild conduct, usually driven by plenty of drink. Recall the day Liam got into a fight with the Russian mafia in Berlin during a concert. According to the narrative, while parading around like a peacock, he yelled, “Do you know who I am?”. Well, SMACK! They didn’t care. So, the outcome is a global tour was suddenly cancelled before you could say “Wonderwall,” and a private plane returned to the UK for oral surgery.

And what Liam was drinking during lockdown 2020 – 2021? Unbelievably, the guy developed an addiction to frozen margaritas. That’s true, the same drink you’d have on a summer vacation in Ibiza was a favourite of the notoriously aggressive vocalist. The Mirror claims Liam was so fixated on the cold drink that it became second nature to him—a far cry from the strong liquor one would expect from a rock star of his level.

Fast forward to the present, and at least in terms of their drinking patterns, it seems the Gallagher brothers have turned over a fresh leaf. Once savouring his wild escapades, Liam is now sober. Reflecting on how his drinking has affected his life, he said candidly in GQ Magazine, “I’ve f*cked a few things up.” Fans are left wondering: what would a sober Oasis even sound like? The shift is noteworthy enough.

Not just Liam has given up alcohol. Noel also tossed the towel saturated with alcohol. Noel said in a recent LADbible story that he has stopped drinking, mostly citing health issues. This new sobriety represents a radical change for a band historically associated with excess. Champagne Supernovas are long gone; nowadays, a peaceful night home with a cup of herbal tea is more probable.

How then does this affect the reunion? Will we see Liam sipping chamomile tea between verses of “Don’t Look Back in Anger”? Will Noel swap pickle juice shots for guitar picks? The mind blinks.

There are varied opinions among the supporters. While some fear that sobriety may lessen their edge, others are thrilled to hear what a clear-headed Oasis might sound like. For me, I’m hoping for a fresh smash track called “Wonderwall (But Make It Mocktail).”

How does this affect the liquor business? Oasis was a brand, developed around a certain rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, not just a band. Their antics were more than just tabloid fodder; they affected a whole generation of fans and musicians. The Gallagher brothers’ close connection to alcohol permeated their public personalities and sponsorship contracts as well.

Still, the business may have to change its emphasis because sobriety is now on the agenda. We could be entering a new age of wellness drinks and non-alcoholic substitutes instead of frozen margaritas or Dom Pérignon bottles. After all, which fans won’t follow suit if the Gallagher brothers can go sober?

Although celebrity impact on drink trends is not new, people start to notice when rock stars replace Jack Daniels with juice cleanses.

It’s got me considering the changing terrain of the booze business. As a fly on the wall at Drinks Network, Australia’s premier service for importing, brand management, and sales, I’ve seen firsthand how consumer preferences are changing. The demand for innovative, non-alcoholic options is skyrocketing faster than Liam’s eyebrow during a snarky interview.

As I sit here, nursing a craft kombucha (don’t judge me), I can’t help but marvel at the journey. From the wild, drunken evenings of the ’90s to this new age of awareness and sobriety, the Gallagher brothers’ narrative is evidence of transformation.

Will this reunion turn out successfully? Will their fresh, clean-living way of life result in music that still speaks to their fans? Time will tell just how this goes. One thing is certain, though: I’ll be front and centre when they return on lifting my glass—of sparkling water—to mark fresh starts and second chances.

Ultimately, whether with or without the hangover, we are all just searching for that Supersonic experience. So, here’s to whatever comes next, whether it’s a sober reflection or a Champagne Supernova. In any case, it will be one hell of a journey.
