Celebrate World Cocktail Month 2024
By Hayden Wood ·
If you haven’t already been advised by your social constituents, May is World Cocktail Month. This is the month when the world celebrates the shake, rattle and roll of spirits, tipples and tinctures to form a sum greater than its parts. A time where we raise a glass in celebration of all things luxurious, deluxe and fabulous.
Old-fashioned whiskey sour or a classic whiskey on the rocks may be the taste we still cherish, but the season of Mixology is here to rock your parties and events! Australian wines are a popular option for fine and formal dining, but what if we told you, it is that time of the year when you experience vibrant and colourful drinks and can choose your new favourite this month? Yes, you guessed it correctly: it is World Cocktail Month 2024!
This is where the spirit and cocktail enthusiasts, lovers, and bartenders celebrate the month passionately and create magic with the art of mixing. This month offers a fantastic opportunity for the seasoned mixer, a casual sipper, and experienced and fresher bartenders to give their best shot at creating the most magical and refreshing drink for the audiences. It’s a time of fun, enjoyment, and discovery. Participating lets you enhance your mixing skills, discover new flavours, and connect with a global community of cocktail enthusiasts. So, let’s dive in and understand how we got this opportunity to explore this month, what events we can attend as the bartender or audience, and how this magic happens and discover the new flavours of this season!
World Cocktail Month
May is World Cocktail Month, so mark your calendars and attend the most happening cocktail events in town. This celebration picked up its pace in the early 2000s when people were still enjoying their classic cocktails during different events, where the bartenders also picked up their skill and experimented with new tastes. Soon, it led to the ear of weekly promotions of one particular flavour for the week, like Martini nights by the hotel, Sangrias by the beach, and so forth. These weekly events soon became popular amongst the audiences, and they started enjoying the fresh tastes and flavours. The glamorous and heroic act of mixing was to be experienced behind the bars by the experienced bartenders. The shakes, rattles and roll of spirits were not part of this month.
Now, as we know, this has taken over from weekly events to a celebration of the month. This celebration of mixing allowed the freshers to experience and share their charm behind bars and create new magical potions for the audiences. It is time to raise our glasses to the latest flavour and vibrant combination of poison in our parties and events.

Key Milestones in World Cocktail Month
2010s: Formal Recognition
As the weekly event picked up its pace and soon became celebrated across bars during May, by 2010, it received formal recognition as World Cocktail Month. Not only did the food and beverage industry get a new scale to promote their event, but the media also helped promote and started showing the glamorous scale behind bars, as they captured different pictures of bartenders throwing and shaking different mixers in the air to create new magical poison. Bartenders also receive significant recognition for creating unique, vibrant, and excellent mixers for their audiences.
2020s: Global Expansion and Innovation
COVID-19 held the World spread across, but the mixers still enjoyed this event. Well, not in the physical format, but yes, in the Virtual World. As a result, this led to a surge in home bartending and virtual cocktail events, online masterclasses, virtual tastings, and social media challenges that allowed people to celebrate World Cocktail Month from the comfort of their homes, connecting with others worldwide. Still, bartenders created new flavours for people across the country. The craziness for these events has increased since the COVID lockdown lifted, and people have resumed their everyday routines.
Fun Fact The most expensive cocktail ever sold cost a whopping $22,579! This martini, called the "Diamonds Are Forever Martini," included a one-carat diamond alongside vodka and lime juice. World Cocktail Month is a great chance to try something luxurious (for a bit less!)
Notable Collaborations
World Cocktail Month is not just a celebration; it’s a platform for collaboration. Major players in the industry, from marketing companies to exhibition galleries, hotels, stand-alone bars and restaurants, musicians, and media, have joined forces to make this event a huge success. The rise of influencers in social media marketing campaigns has further amplified the reach and impact of these events, making them even more popular and engaging. Sometimes, the event is collaborated on in the bartender’s name alone, as they are famous for creating the best mixers in town.
